Branded game of the week: Berghaus
This week's branded game is from Berghaus, the outdoor clothing and equipment brand. Built by Crab Creative, this game is a little more involved that the usual casual time-killer fare that characterises most branded games.
How does the brand fit? Berghaus is one of the key brands in the outdoor activity space, so a mountaineering game makes perfect sense. (How many climbing games can there be in the first place? - Ed.) But the branding is subtle, allowing the challenge of the game to take centre stage. The registration and scoreboarding mechanism encourages fans of the game, and presumeably mountaineering enthusiasts, to compete with eachother, all the time spending time on the Berghaus site.
Is it any good? It certainly looks expensive. Sections of the game are introduced with short video clips featuring real climbers as they parachute onto the snow-capped mountain range and begin their ascent. The controls aren't tricky to master, but there's a lot for the player to remember, you could do with a Playstation controller to cope with everything. Once you've got the hang things though, it is remarkably addictive, ensuring plenty of time on the site.
Verdict? Brand fit 8/10, gameplay 8/10. This is a game by climbing enthusiasts for climbing enthusiasts, the attention to detail is remarkable and the video inserts are a brilliant touch. This might not create any new followers to the Berghaus brand, but its an excellent reward from a specialist brand to its loyal fan and customer base. Climb Mount Asgard proves that not all brand games have to be lightweight affairs. Try it for yourself here.
