Part 1 – Loan Rangers: Borrowing Words from Abroad

 Of the 5,000 new words that feature in the latest edition of the German equivalent of the OED – the Duden – one has raised a few more eyebrows than the rest. It’s an Anglicism, or a loan word from the English language, that has gained intriguing popularity in the German-speaking world, even appearing on the lips of Chancellor Angela Merkel. The word is Shitstorm, and means in German roughly what it means in English.

How do you make a billboard roar? Ask Land Rover.

Very few individuals experience the thrill of driving a powerful 5.0 litre supercharged engine, or even just hearing the dominating roar such an engine provides, yet Land Rover has innovatively allowed travellers to familiarise themselves with this through its latest campaign, ‘Push the pedal hear the engine’.

Moving away from laborious, tedious advertising, Land Rover built a special digital outdoor campaign to publicise its all-new Range Rover Sport, featuring an accelerator pedal, responsive interactive content and directional sound. ‘Push the pedal, hear the engine’ delivered the speed and thrill of the SUV’s powerful engine to travellers at Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted Airports over a four week period.

Take the survey: Is mobile really at the centre of the advertising universe?

It’s the fastest growing segment within internet advertising, but the true potential of mobile is yet to be unlocked. Well at least that was the general consensus at The Festival of Media Asia earlier this year. In fact, some research carried out by Warc and Mobile Marketing Association on behalf of The Festival of Media Asia highlighted that 90% of marketers in Asia believe that mobile will have a major role to play next year, but they are still struggling from a mobile strategy disconnect.

Don't let anybody kid you, it's all personal

2013 has been the year of responsive design, and with good reason. Like many seismic changes on the web, it was catalysed by a problem: Readers were moving off the desktop to mobile phones and tablets, and ad dollars were leaving with them. So digital publishers, social platforms and start-ups rushed to create solutions that would deliver a great content and ads experience on any device. But now that the dust has begun to settle on responsive, it's time to revisit the original motive behind this move; creating a more personal content experience for readers.

Don't get me wrong, responsive design has been an absolute necessity and has taken us far, but the pressure to fix a problem shelved an even more powerful opportunity to use data and technology to personalise. Here's an analogy to illustrate my point...
