Pinterest in pictures

See our recent article about Pinterest for more on how brands should be using the platform - but who is actually using the site? With content biased towards design, cookery, baby pictures and fashion - is it wrong to assume that Pinterest is supported by large numbers of affluent, aspirational mothers? Judge for yourself in this interesting (if occasionally predictable) infographic...

Publishing in the digital era

The idea of brands telling stories is a hot topic right now. Coca-Cola is all about "liquid and linked" content, Heineken has had some amazing success with its global content strategy and the theme at this year's Festival of Media is based on the "science of storytelling".

Popular wisdom suggests that the future of brand content lies in video, and video is undoubtedly an exciting and powerful medium, but the popularity of e-readers and tablets has revitalised the written word, albeit in digital form.

In our experience, the tablet edition of Wired is the standard by which other digital magazines should be judged. The technical team at Condé Nast has created a superb platform for brands. Full page ads still appear in the ‘book’, but they are now rich with content and limited only by the imagination of the advertiser.

The whole content paywall debate still continues; but users are culturally adapting to the idea of paid-for content and its value over the free general clutter that is the bulk of the internet, as demonstrated by this infographic:

The colour of brands

This infographic discusses the psychology of colours and their importance in how we react to them. Ignore the home decoration business at the top, and there are some interesting insights for brands further down. For instance, it turns out that the real secret of KFC’s success is the fact they use a lot of red, a colour known to stimulate appetite. And I thought it was all down to that secret blend of 11 herbs and spices.

Media addiction and multi-tasking

Go to any media conference and representatives of all channels will tell you that we're all consuming more of every kind of media. Obviously we can only do this by consuming several bits of media at once, but how does this affect our brains?

The answer to this, as well as several useful presentation statistics can be found on this infographic from Carnegie Mellon University, even if the title does make it sound like a warning for a drug called 'media'.

Building the perfect website

Okay, so such a thing might not really exist but in attempt to help the online world get a little bit closer to the discovery of the perfect website, ROI Media in South Africa has crunched some data and viewing habits to help create an infographic guide.

This won't stop people getting to flash with Flash, nor will it stop well established sites needlessly experimenting with successfull layouts just for the hell of it (Yes, I'm looking at you lot at the bbc.co.uk homepage), but if this helps stop just one wayward web design, its creation should be applauded. Some of the stats are a bit familiar, but there's some nice user experience insights. It also tracks the continued meteoric rise of the tumblr blogging platform.

Social science and insight clichés - An infographic

Social media has been around long enough now to allow a number of universal consumer insights to have emerged. In their worst form they appear as hackneyed phrases in most media awards entries. It seems that at any given time, half the marketing on the planet is driven by the revelation that "teenagers are passionate about music" and the idea that consumers want to "engage with brands that provide entertaining content".

Facebook facelift: The verdict

So Facebook has a fancy new timeline functionality that makes it easier for you to display all your personal details and life history online. Marvellous. I'm starting to acquire a reputation for Facebook skepticism so I'll just share this infographic from Sodahead.com.
