Chatroulette: If you build it; They will come
Chatroulette may be slightly old hat by now. Upon its release, the initial excitement of the platform soon gave way to the grim realisation that when you allow people unrestricted, anonymous access to the internet - they'll inevitably get naked. Give a man (or a woman) a webcam, and it won't be long before they release their inner-exhibitionist.
What this says about us as an species I'm not sure exactly - but I'm sure it's not good. Luckily, it turns out that the people at Chatroulette are considering introducing special recognition software, to block out offensive images. While this gives rise to the potentially amusing situation of "when is a penis not a penis", it does at least signify a move in the right direction - and probably the death knell of Chatroulette, given that's all anyone goes on to look at anyway.
Admittedly there's been some clever subversion of the Chatroulette platform with some shrewd marketing campaigns, aimed it has to be said, at people using the site for lascivious purposes - lending strength to the question: At the end of the day, who actually chats on Chatroulette?
