Coke shows its caring side

Never one to miss an opportunity to capitalise on public sentiment, Coke tasked a variety of Italian fashion designers to come up with labels for its Coke Light bottles. Marni, Moschino, Ferreti and Versace have all contributed designs, with profits from the sale of the bottles going towards funding scholarships for young women affected by last year's earthquake in Abruzzo, Italy.

The joys of Royal Mail

The UK's Royal Mail is not winning any brownie points with the series of union strikes over the past few weeks.

The CWU has launched a series of regional and national strikes to protest against the Royal Mail's cost cutting initiatives to improve efficiency.

The Royal Mail argues that volumes are down by 10% year on year, with every 1% decline costing the Royal Mail £70m in lost revenues. It says that the changes have been successfully made in most parts of the UK.

Either way, it is the Royal Mail brand and small businesses that rely on post that suffer. This was perfectly illustrated by the arrival of a colleague's birthday flowers today, two weeks after the event:

People who spend all their time online aren't traditionally considered to be the most athletic. But illustrator Patrick Moberg has the solution: The New Media Workout Plan.

Each time you view one of the sites mentioned, you need to do the corresponding exercise. The message is "Burn some fat, not yo' brain".

How long until Dulux does something similar?

Pantone Inc has launched an iPhone app that allows you to select a colour from any photo taken and match it to the precise Pantone colour. myPantone allows you to take your colour swatches with you wherever you go, without the need for huge material samples for interior design or graphic design purposes.

The app also automatically generates harmonious colour combinations and create colour palettes.

New Vegemite goes down like sh*t sandwich

Vegemite was the latest brand to ask the audience about what to name a new, milder version of the spread. What did it choose? iSnack 2.0.

The name was selected following a nationwide competition to name the product, sold from July under the label 'Name Me'. Some 50,000 suggestions were submitted, with web designer Dean Robbins coming up with the winning entry, which was announced in front of 100,000 people at the Australian Football League grand final at the weekend.

Kraft Foods said that the name was chosen to “to align the new product with a younger market — and the “cool” credentials of Apple’s iPod and iPhone.”

The name has polorized people, provoking (on the non-fan side) such an extreme reaction that a website has been set up to honour 'Names that are better than iSnack 2.0' and video reactions have been posted to YouTube:


 In fact, many people are certain that the whole thing is a hoax.

Noodle landings

To celebrate the launch of Golden Wonder's Pot Noodle rival, The Nation's Noodle, a huge number of pots were parachuted to the ground in Portsmouth in what they are calling 'The Noodle Landings'. One of the pots contained £1000.

Golden Wonder launched the Pot Noodle in 1977 but later sold it to Unilever. Golden Wonder now hopes to take some of Unilever's 77% market share in cup noodles.
