Stripy animal innovation in Gaza

When the two zebras in a Gaza zoo died of starvation, the zoo owner came up with an innovative way of allowing children to experience the creatures while getting round Israeli restrictions on the importation of animals.

The result was a couple of white donkeyspainted with stripes to resemble zebras. Using masking trape and black hair dye applied with a paint brush, Mohammed Bargouthi was able to create convincing "zebras".

Bringing a real zebra via smuggling tunnels would have cost around $40,000. Ingenious.

This follows a similar move by a Thai zoo which saw elephants painted as pandas to raise awareness about the endangered species.
