An invaluable tool for search marketers.

Okay perhaps I've bent the truth a little for the sake of a sensationalist headline (I've obviously been spending too much time on the BBC news website), but it is true that Google has a list of words that are ignored by the new instant search facility

While this is obviously a well intentioned move to stop children stumbling across websites they shouldn't, the list itself makes for quite bizarre, and paranoid, reading.

For the four of you who have no idea about Google's new instant search, it does exactly what it says on the tin. As you enter your text into the search box, the Google results below update with each keystroke in an attempt to speed up the search process.

Naturally, this could lead to some interesting detours on a typical search journey, especially given the amount of adult material online. Google Instant's blacklist aims to protect people from these potentially offensive detours.

Predictable terms are included (red letter indicates where the results blank out): 'asian babe', 'fetish' and  'twat' come as no surprise.

Bizarrely, you won't get any results for 'crossdresser', but you will for 'transvestite'. Also 'homosexual', 'heterosexual' and 'asexual' are all good - but 'bisexuals' need to find another search engine.

No doubt the list will continue to grow as more potentially offensive/rude/anti-Google words enter the search vernacular (searches for 'Google is evil' or 'I hate (followed by anything)' gets you nowhere!) but you have to wonder about the souls are that are charged with policing internet search language. They're obviously a group of easily shocked individuals.

The full list, such as any list can ever be full, can be found here - and will now doubt be useful to those in the search marketing industry.
